  1. Proof of engine protection
    The grade of protection of an engine oil is determined by its resistance to wear, oxidation and many other oil properties. Wolf proves that its lubricants have the right protective properties by checking the composition of the fluid.

    An infrared spectroscopy shows the well-hidden components inside freshly arrived additive packages and finished products. This test allows us to open a window and look at a fluid at a molecular level. Different wavelengths of light are sent through a cell holding the oil sample, after which the machine measures the absorption rate of the sample for each beam of light. Each type of component absorbs light at different wavelengths, giving us a clear view of the components present within the sample. Each batch of finished WOLF OFFICIALTECH 0W20 LL FE leaving our factory has proven that it contains the desired protective additives.

Friction reducing properties
Friction absorbs energy thus lowers the efficiency of the engine. Friction reducing additives and extreme-pressure additives, which are mainly used within high-pressure applications like transmission systems or differentials, reduce friction by reinforcing the oil film. We prove the presence of friction reducing additives within our products with the FTIR method, which we also use to prove the engine oil’s protective properties.

Low viscosity
The fluid within the engines also causes friction itself. Viscosity is “the resistance of a fluid to flowing” meaning that a viscous fluid will cause the engine to consume more fuel. The lower the viscosity the better? Well, it comes with a limit. A too low viscosity fluid won’t form a stable oil film. The bottom limit of the viscosity is determined with a High Temperature High Shear test (HTHS test). This test simulates real operational conditions by exposing the oil to high temperatures and fast moving components.

At our lab, we use two other tests to check for the additional viscosity properties of our engine oil sample:

Dynamic viscosity test
Fast-moving engine parts are exposed to friction from other parts and from the lubricant itself! This directly influences the fuel consumption, so it is crucial to balance this resistance with the oil’s protective properties. Winter viscosity, in the case of our sample this is the ‘0’ in front of the ‘W’, is determined with a Cold Cranking test at temperatures as low as -35°C. Our lab technicians conduct this test by adding a rotating element to a fluid, after which they measure the amount of force needed to stir the sample at low temperatures.

Kinematic viscosity
We check the second SAE viscosity to define the ‘20’ in ‘0W20’. The test set-up measures the time it takes for a set volume of engine oil to run through a glass tube under the influence of gravity. The quicker it flows, the lower the viscosity. We measure the SAE kinematic viscosity at 100°C to mimic the operational conditions found within a running engine.

3. Proof of resistance against low temperatures

The base oils and pour point depressants of the engine oil determine the pour point of engine oil. WOLF OFFICIALTECH 0W20 LL FE has an excellent low pour point of -51°C, but how do we test for this property?

Pour point: “The lowest temperature at which a liquid remains fluid.”

The most efficient way to determine the pour point of a fluid is to lower its temperature and try to pour it! ASTM D6892, also known as the Robotic Tilt Method, is an automatic machine that tests for the pour point of fluids. A tube containing a sample of the oil is put into the machine. The machine lowers the temperature of the sample at a pre-set rate, and every 3°C it tips the tube. An extremely accurate optical device checks whether the oil is still flowing. The machine automatically repeats this process until the fluid stops flowing.

Our sample of WOLF OFFICIALTECH 0W20 LL FE showed no sign of flowing at -54°C. Afterwards we added 3°C, which is the temperature interval of this standardised test, to obtain the outstanding -51°C test result!
